FaceSearch vs Yandex Images
Yandex Images is the free reverse image search that investigators recommend most for faces, because its similar-image results often surface the same person. It is still an image engine: it compares pictures, indexes no faces, and is run by a Russian company under its own terms. FaceSearch indexes faces on public pages, starts free, and removes you on request. Here is the honest comparison.
First search free. No account needed. Updated November 6, 2026 by The FaceSearch Team. Prices checked on November 6, 2026.
Use Yandex Images as a free second opinion: upload the picture, open the similar-images strip, and you will sometimes see the same person in other photos. Use FaceSearch when you want that result on purpose rather than by luck, with the source page on every match and a removal route if the face is yours.

Why Yandex gets recommended for faces
Open Yandex Images, use the camera icon to upload a picture or paste a URL, and the results page shows copies of the image in different sizes, the sites where it appears, and a strip of similar images. That similar-images strip is why OSINT guides recommend Yandex: its visual similarity model weighs faces heavily, so a portrait often returns other portraits of the same person where Google Lens returns haircuts and shirts. It is a real advantage over the other free engines and it costs nothing.
It is also a side effect, not a feature. Yandex does not index faces, does not rank by face similarity and does not promise to find the same person; it finds images that look alike, which includes the same person and includes strangers with the same pose and lighting. A face search engine ranks by the face on purpose, shows the source page on every match, and lets the person in the photo ask to be removed. That last point is where the two part ways for anyone searching their own face.
Where Yandex Images wins
- Free and unlimited, with source links shown and no account.
- The best free similar-image results for portraits among the general engines, in our experience and in most published OSINT guides.
- Coverage of Russian-language and Eastern European sites that other engines index thinly.
- Image filters, including narrowing to images that contain faces, by size, colour and site.
- Finding copies of the exact picture, like Google Lens and TinEye, with sizes listed.
Where FaceSearch wins
- On purpose, not by luck. FaceSearch measures the face and ranks by face similarity; Yandex's similar-images strip happens to work on faces sometimes.
- A source page on every match, ranked, saved to your history, with deep search for a wider pass.
- Removal. If the face is yours, one email takes it out of FaceSearch results for free; see remove my photos. Yandex has no face index and no consumer removal route for a face.
- Known handling of your upload. Metadata stripped, used only for the search, never sold or added to a face database, under terms you can read on privacy by design. An upload to Yandex is governed by Yandex LLC's own policy and may be processed in Russia; read that policy before uploading a photo of yourself or anyone else.
- Apps and support on iOS and Android, with take-down help on Business.
Privacy and jurisdiction
Yandex is a Russian company, and its user agreement and privacy policy, not EU, UK or US law, set the terms for what happens to a picture you upload. For a photo of a stranger that is a reason for caution; for a photo of yourself it is a decision only you can make. FaceSearch operates under the rules on our acceptable use and privacy by design pages, and the legal guide explains how biometric law treats face search in the US, EU, UK and India. Neither engine should be used to identify a private person; Yandex does not try to, and FaceSearch returns pages, not names.
When to use which
| You have | Start with | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Your own face and the question "where am I online" | FaceSearch | Yandex on any specific photo you find, to trace copies |
| A dating profile photo and a doubt | Both; both are free to start | Read the catfish check guide |
| A picture you think was reposted on Russian-language or Eastern European sites | Yandex Images | FaceSearch for other photos of the person |
| A face you want removed from search results | FaceSearch's removal email | The removal guide for source sites and Google |
| A stranger's face and curiosity | Neither. Read acceptable use |
Questions
01Is Yandex better than FaceSearch for finding faces?
It is the best free general image engine for look-alikes, and for Russian-language sites it may find copies FaceSearch has not crawled. It still matches pictures, not faces, so results for the same person are a side effect. FaceSearch ranks by the face on purpose, shows the source page on every match and lets you remove your own face. Use Yandex as a free second opinion.
02Is Yandex reverse image search free?
Yes, entirely, with no account and source links shown. FaceSearch's first search is free without an account; opening every source link needs a paid plan from $5 a week.
03Does Yandex do face recognition?
Not as a product. Yandex Images finds visually similar images and sites where a picture appears; its similarity model weighs faces, which is why portraits often return the same person, but there is no face index, no face ranking and no claim to match people. A face search engine does that deliberately.
04Is Yandex image search safe and legal to use?
Searching is lawful, and uploading your own photo is your choice. Yandex is a Russian company and your upload is handled under its own terms, which may include processing in Russia; read them before uploading a photo of yourself or anyone else. Searching a stranger's face is subject to local law on any engine, and to our acceptable use rules on FaceSearch.
05Can I use both Yandex and FaceSearch?
Yes, and for a stolen-photo problem it is worth it. Yandex finds copies of the exact picture and sometimes the same person by similarity; FaceSearch finds other photos of the face with the source page on each. Both are free to start.
06Which is cheaper?
Yandex: it costs nothing. FaceSearch is free for the first search and then $5 for a Starter week with all links. The price buys a deliberate face match, saved results and a removal route, not a better version of Yandex's similar-images strip.
07Can I remove my face from Yandex Images?
There is no face index to remove you from. Yandex offers removal of search results through its own legal and webmaster processes, mostly under Russian law, and the practical route for most people is to get the photo taken down at its source so every engine drops it. Our removal guide covers that. Removal from FaceSearch results is free by email.
