Alternatives
Social Catfish alternatives: cheaper ways to check a photo
Social Catfish bundles a face-matching reverse image search with phone, email, name, username and address lookups and sells the bundle as a report. People look for an alternative when they only want the photo check, when a short paid trial turned into a monthly subscription, or when the person they are checking is outside the United States. This list ranks the options and dates every price.

Why people look for a Social Catfish alternative
Social Catfish is a people-search service that grew out of catfish investigations. Its reverse image search uses face matching rather than file matching, which is a real advantage over Google for dating photos, and it sits next to lookups by phone number, email address, name, username and street address. The product is a report on a person. The reasons people leave follow from that.
- Report pricing for a photo question. You wanted to know whether one dating photo appears elsewhere. Social Catfish sells that inside a subscription built for full background reports, and the price reflects the report, not the search.
- The trial converts. The way in is a short paid trial that becomes a recurring monthly subscription unless you cancel in time. The amounts are shown at checkout; the pattern is the complaint we hear most often from people who arrive from Social Catfish.
- United States focus. The phone, address and name records behind the reports are overwhelmingly US data. If your match says they live in Manchester, Mumbai or Manila, the report side has little to offer and you are left with the image search.
- No free search results. The site runs a search and tells you there are matches, then asks for payment to see them. Several engines below show source links without a card.
- You get a report, not pages. A face engine returns the public pages where a similar face appears, which is what you need for a removal request or a platform report. A people-search report is a different artefact, useful for a different question.
- It is one of many features. If you only ever run the image search, you are paying for the five lookups you never open.
Is Social Catfish free?
No. You can start a search for free and the site will tell you whether it found something, but seeing the result needs the paid trial, and the trial converts to a monthly plan. The exact amounts are on its site on November 6, 2026 and change often enough that we do not repeat them here. If free matters, the engines below with a real free tier are FaceSearch (first search free, top results shown, details here), FaceCheck.ID (free results with source links), and the free image engines for copies of the exact picture.
The alternatives, ranked
Ranked by the rubric above for the job people bring from Social Catfish: checking whether a dating or social photo belongs to the person using it, without buying a report. Social Catfish itself sits at the end for reference.
- 1. FaceCheck.IDThe best fit for the Social Catfish job. It is strong on dating and social profile photos, including poor-quality ones, and its free searches show source links. Paid use is credit packs from $19 for 150 credits that expire after 14 days, at 3 credits a search. It frames results around scammers and criminals; treat its red flags as leads, not findings.
- Ours2. FaceSearchA face-first engine with a free first search and no account for it, then Starter at $5 a week for five normal and three deep searches with every source link unlocked. Public web only, no face database built from uploads, free removal by email. No phone, email or name lookups: this is the photo check alone, which is the point.
- 3. PimEyesThe broadest open-web face index by most accounts, but it excludes social media and video platforms, which is where dating photos tend to come from. $29.99 a month for Open Plus; free searches hide the source pages.
- 4. Yandex ImagesFree, and the strongest free option for a dating photo because of what it indexes. It matches images rather than faces, so a cropped or filtered copy may still be found while a different photo of the same person is not.
- 5. Google LensFree and the right first step for an exact copy of the picture: stock photos, modelling portfolios and reposts show up here. Deliberately weak at identifying people, so a miss proves nothing.
- 6. TinEyeFree and image-only. Finds where one picture was first published and how it was edited, which exposes a stolen professional photo quickly. No face matching.
- 7. Face Search AIThree free searches a day without an account, plans from $7.77 a month. A separate company from FaceSearch despite the similar name.
- 8. Lenso.aiAn image search suite with a People category, filters and alerts, from $15.99 a month by the reviews we checked, with face search only in selected regions. More tool than the catfish question needs.
- 9. Reversely.aiA reverse image suite with a face tool and an AI-image detector, the latter useful when a profile photo might be generated rather than stolen. $9.99 per unlocked result.
- 10. Eyematch.aiA newer face-first entrant with a free preview and paid plans. Less documentation and a shorter track record than the engines above.
- 11. Bing Visual SearchFree, image-based, and occasionally finds copies the others miss. Not a face engine.
- 12. Search4FacesFree face search limited to VK, Odnoklassniki, TikTok and Clubhouse profiles. Relevant when the match claims to be from a Russian-speaking country and irrelevant elsewhere.
- 13. ProFaceFinderA small paid face search engine with a limited index. Worth a look only when the larger engines come back empty.
- Social Catfish, for referenceA people-search report service: face-matching image search plus phone, email, name, username and address lookups, mainly US records, sold as a short paid trial that converts to a monthly subscription with the amounts shown at checkout. The right tool when you want a report on a person, and the wrong price for a single photo check.
What you lose by leaving, and what replaces it
A face engine does not look up phone numbers, email addresses or street addresses. If those lookups were part of your check, keep that in mind before cancelling. Some of it has free substitutes: a username or a phone number pasted into a web search in quotes finds the public profiles and listings attached to it; a profile name plus the word scam finds the forum threads where victims compare notes; and a live video call settles the question that no lookup can. The verify someone is real page sets out the non-photo checks in order.

How to pick
A dating profile photo
Run the photo on FaceCheck.ID and FaceSearch for other photos of the same face, then on Google Lens and Yandex for exact copies. Thirty seconds each, nothing to buy. The catfish check guide explains what a hit means and what a miss does not.
Someone who has asked for money
The same searches, and then the reporting routes matter more than any engine: the platform's report form, ReportFraud.ftc.gov in the US, Action Fraud in the UK, and your bank the same day. The romance scam photo check page lays this out, and the FTC's romance scam advice is linked under Sources.
A seller, landlord, roommate or contractor
A face engine finds the public pages where the face appears, which tells you whether the photo is theirs. It does not and must not stand in for a background check, and uses such as tenant, employment, credit and insurance decisions are restricted by law. The verify someone is real page draws that line.
Your own photos
Social Catfish is built for checking other people. For finding your own photos, including copies you never agreed to, a face engine with a cheap repeatable plan is the better shape: the find my photos online guide shows the routine.
If you leave Social Catfish
- Cancel the subscription in your Social Catfish account before the trial or the current month ends; the trial converts automatically if you do not.
- Keep screenshots of any report you paid for. Reports are not available after cancellation.
- If you want your own data out of their system, ask through their support contact; the site lists opt-out via support rather than a public form.
- Run the photo you cared about on a free face search so you have the same answer without the subscription.
Questions
01Is Social Catfish free?
No. A search starts for free and reports that matches exist, but seeing them requires the paid trial, which converts to a monthly subscription unless cancelled. Amounts are shown at checkout. For a free photo check, use FaceSearch's free first search, FaceCheck.ID's free results, or Yandex and Google Lens for copies of the exact picture.
02How do I cancel the Social Catfish trial?
In your account on their site, before the trial period ends, and keep the confirmation. If a charge appears after cancelling, contact their support with the confirmation and, failing that, your card issuer. We have no inside knowledge of their billing; this is the general shape of a converting trial.
03Which alternative is most like Social Catfish?
For the image search alone, FaceCheck.ID, which is also built around dating and social photos and shows source links for free. None of the face engines replaces the phone, email, name and address lookups; for those, plain web searches in quotes cover the common cases.
04Does Social Catfish work for people outside the United States?
Its image search runs on any photo. The report side, phone, address and name records, is mainly US data, so for a match who lives elsewhere you are paying for lookups that return little. A face engine gives the same photo answer for any country.
05Is FaceSearch better than Social Catfish?
For the photo check: FaceSearch finds other photos of the same face on public pages, the first search is free, and Starter is $5 a week with all links unlocked. For a background-style report with phone, email and address lookups: no, FaceSearch does not do that at all. The full side-by-side is on the FaceSearch vs Social Catfish page.
06Is it legal to check someone's photo this way?
Checking the identity of a person you are about to trust is a lawful, ordinary purpose in the countries we serve. Using the result to track someone down, or for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions, is not, and is against our acceptable use. The legal guide covers the US, EU, UK and India.
