Alternatives to Google reverse image search for finding a face
Google reverse image search, now Google Lens, is the first tool most people try with a photo of a person, and the first to come back empty. It looks for copies of the picture and for similar objects, and it is deliberately weak at matching faces. This page ranks what to use instead when the job is a person, and the free image tools that still beat Google at tracing a picture.

Why Google reverse image search comes back empty for a face
Google's own help page describes Lens as a way to learn about an image or the objects in it, and lists what a result can contain: similar images, websites that host the image or a similar one, and searches for the objects it recognises. Faces are not on that list, and that is a design decision rather than a gap. Google matches the picture as a whole. Upload a photo of a person and you get pages that host that exact photo, pictures with a similar composition, and perhaps the brand of jacket. You do not get a different photo of the same person taken somewhere else.
For the question most people arrive with, "does this face appear anywhere else under another name", that is the wrong tool. A reverse face search compares the face itself and returns other photos of the same person. The difference is explained in full on face search vs reverse image search.
When Google is still the right tool
- An exact copy of a picture. Stock photos, modelling portfolios, reposts and memes: if the picture has been published as is, Google Lens usually finds it, and for free.
- Where a photo was first published. Google and TinEye together answer this faster than any face engine.
- Products, places and objects. That is what Lens is built for.
- A first pass before paying for anything. Thirty seconds on Google and Yandex costs nothing and sometimes ends the search.
Face search and image search, side by side
| Face search engine | Google reverse image search | |
|---|---|---|
| What is compared | The face in the photo | The whole image |
| Finds | Other photos of the same person on public pages | Copies and edits of the same picture, similar images, objects |
| Different photo, same person | Yes | Rarely |
| Same photo, cropped or filtered | Usually, if the face is clear | Usually |
| Price | Free first search here; paid plans for all source links | Free |
| Removal of your own face | Per engine; free by email at FaceSearch | Google removes some personal content from results on request; the page itself stays up |
The alternatives, ranked
Ranked by the rubric above for the job Google Lens did not do: finding other public photos of a face. The free image engines are included because people switching from Google usually want a free option first, and because they remain the right tool for copies. Google Lens sits at the end for reference.
- 1. Yandex ImagesThe nearest free drop-in replacement for the Google habit, and often the strongest free option for a face because of what it indexes. It still matches images rather than faces, so expect copies and near-copies rather than a different photo of the same person.
- Ours2. FaceSearchA face-first engine with a free first search and no account for it, then Starter at $5 a week for five normal and three deep searches with every source link unlocked. Public web only, no face database built from uploads, free removal by email. Run it after Google comes back empty.
- 3. FaceCheck.IDBest when the photo comes from a dating app or a social profile, and strong on poor-quality images. Free searches show source links; paid use is credit packs from $19 for 150 credits valid 14 days, at 3 credits a search.
- 4. PimEyesThe broadest open-web face index by most accounts, with alerts and takedowns on paid tiers, but no social media. $29.99 a month for Open Plus; free searches hide the source pages.
- 5. TinEyeFree, image-only, and better than Google at one thing: showing where a picture first appeared and how each copy was edited. Zero face matching.
- 6. Bing Visual SearchFree and image-based; its index overlaps Google's imperfectly, so it occasionally finds a copy Google missed. Not a face engine.
- 7. Lenso.aiAn image search suite with a People category, filters and alerts, from $15.99 a month by the reviews we checked. Face search is only offered in selected regions, so check availability first.
- 8. Face Search AIThree free searches a day without an account, plans from $7.77 a month, an API from $50 a month. A separate company from FaceSearch despite the similar name.
- 9. Reversely.aiA reverse image suite with a face tool and an AI-image detector, which helps when a profile photo might be generated rather than stolen. $9.99 per unlocked result.
- 10. Eyematch.aiA newer face-first entrant with a free preview and paid plans. Less documentation and a shorter track record than the engines above.
- 11. Social CatfishA people-search report service with a face-matching image search inside it, sold as a short paid trial that converts to a monthly subscription. Useful when you want a report, not a list of pages.
- 12. Search4FacesFree face search limited to VK, Odnoklassniki, TikTok and Clubhouse profiles. Relevant for Russian-speaking social networks and irrelevant elsewhere.
- 13. ProFaceFinderA small paid face search engine with a limited index. Worth a look only when the larger engines come back empty.
- Google Lens, for referenceFree, enormous, built into Chrome, the Google app and images.google.com, and the best tool there is for copies of an exact picture. By design it does not identify people, so a photo of a face returns copies and look-alike compositions, not other photos of that person.

How to pick
Find other photos of a person
A face engine, by definition. Start with the free options: FaceSearch's first search with no account, and FaceCheck.ID's free results. If the face has a public footprint, one of them usually shows it. Confirm any match with the name, date and place on the source page, because look-alikes happen; the doppelgänger effect explains why.
Find where this exact picture was published
Stay with the image engines: Google Lens, TinEye, Yandex and Bing, in that order, all free. How to reverse image search has the steps for each on desktop, iPhone and Android.
Check a dating photo
Both kinds. The image engines catch stolen portfolio and stock photos; the face engines catch the same face under a different name on a page Google will not show. The catfish check guide has the order and what each result means.
Find your own photos
A face engine for photos of you that you have never seen, Google for copies of the ones you posted. Most people are surprised by the first list and recognise the second. The find my photos online guide shows the routine, and the removal guide what to do next.
Removing a photo of yourself from Google
Leaving Google as a search tool is easy; getting Google to stop showing a photo of you is a separate job. Google's help page is clear that most images in its results come from sites it does not own, so it points you to the site owner or host first, and offers a personal content removal request for a limited set of cases such as intimate images and personal information. The Google Images opt-out guide walks through the form and its limits, and the takedown guide covers the site itself.
Questions
01Why does Google reverse image search not find people?
Because it matches the whole picture, not the face. Google's help page lists what a Lens result contains: similar images, websites hosting the image or a similar one, and searches for recognised objects. A different photo of the same person is not a similar image to Google, and the product avoids identifying people by design.
02Is there a free alternative that finds faces?
FaceSearch's first search is free with no account and shows the top results. FaceCheck.ID's free tier shows results with source links. Face Search AI allows three free searches a day. Yandex is free but image-based. Search4Faces is free for four Russian-speaking networks only.
03Is Google Lens the same as reverse image search?
Yes, for practical purposes. Google folded its reverse image search into Lens; the upload box on images.google.com, the camera icon in the Google app and the right-click option in Chrome all run Lens. The behaviour is the same: copies, similar images and objects, not faces.
04Can I run these searches on a phone?
Yes. Google Lens is in the Google app and Chrome on iPhone and Android, Yandex and Bing work in a mobile browser, and FaceSearch has iOS and Android apps as well as the website. Screenshot the photo, crop to the face, and upload. The photo tips page covers what makes a usable crop.
05Is Yandex better than Google for faces?
Often, for a free tool, because of what Yandex indexes and how it ranks visually similar images. It is still an image engine: it finds copies and near-copies and misses different photos of the same person. For those you need a face engine.
06Is it legal to search for a person's face?
Searching for your own face is lawful wherever these engines operate. Searching for someone else is lawful in most places for ordinary purposes such as checking who you are dealing with, with restrictions on employment, tenant, credit and insurance uses and stricter biometric rules in some jurisdictions. Our legal guide covers the US, EU, UK and India, and our acceptable use page covers what we allow.
